JMU professor completes Appalachian Trail

Jeff Wasserboehr’s story, “Taking it to the Trail” in the Sept. 4 issue of “The Breeze” is a delight. The story of JMU’s Kate Kessler, professor of writing and rhetoric, accomplishing her goal of completing the hike of the Appalachian Trail in its entirety allows the reader a great opportunity to live vicariously, enjoying the thrills and unexpected pleasures offered by such a sojourn.

My personal favorite is the episode of Kessler, awaking during the night to the sensation of pressure on her chest. A timber rattlesnake? bear paw? Appalachian bigfoot? As she flicks on her headlamp, the unknown creature is revealed: “A convoy of dozens of thumbnailed-sized Hop-toads were inching their way across her chest in a neat-lined formation.”

Congratulations Professor Kessler! And thanks to you and Wasserboehr for sharing your experiences with the Madison community.
