largest-ever gift from Forbes

At the Centennial Luncheon on March 14, President Linwood H. Rose announced the largest-ever gift to JMU. The $5 million gift from Bruce and Lois Forbes will name the Performing Arts Center.  And, just as important for Madison, the gift signals the birth of a “new culture of philanthropy” at JMU—a necessary component if JMU is to achieve its potential to develop the university’s private fundraising into a “world-class program,” according to Rose.  The Forbes are responsible for changing the Madison campus in a number of ways. Thanks to the couple, our campus has statues of James Madison in two prominent spots. JMU students have developed the tradition of festooning the life-sized “Jemmy” with mementos of student life. The newest statue, heroic-sized and affectionately named “Big Jim,” will quickly be adopted into campus culture I’m sure.
