Three cheers for three stars

Lt. Gen. Raymond Mason ('78)

We learned recently that the U.S. Senate has confirmed the appointment of General Raymond Mason (’78) to the rank of Lieutenant General and his assignment as Deputy Chief of Staff, G-4, of the United States Army. The Sept. 23 Senate confirmation makes Mason a three-star general. According to Lt. Col. and director of JMU’s ROTC program Robert Pettit, Mason is now the highest ranking active duty Army officer to graduate from JMU and the JMU Army ROTC program — a program Mason was instrumental in starting while he was an undergraduate.

In addition to inclusion in our list of Be the Change individuals, the general received the 2007 Ronald E. Carrier Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from the university. The award recognizes individuals with notable and exceptional accomplishments in their chosen fields.

Our congratulations — and three cheers — to Lt. Gen. Mason.
