June 20, 2008JMU alumna Bertie Selvey, Class of 1958, found a way to change the future for an American landmark–the Byrd Theatre in Richmond, Va. She’s fought hard to save this architectural wonder from destruction and rallied others to the cause. The result? Audiences will continue to delight in the marvels of this “show palace.”

Amy Macaleer – Milken educator
June 16, 2008One of the new additions to the Be the Change Web site is Amy Macaleer (‘01) a 2007-08 Milken Educator Award winner. This high school math teacher uses inventive teaching techniques and makes learning fun. She’s only the second JMU alum to win this award and the 27th award winner from Virginia.
It’s muscle time!
June 12, 2008Know a young athlete looking to develop strength, endurance, power, or speed? JMU’s 11th annual AthElite Strength and Conditioning Academy begins Monday, June 16. The academy is open to any male or female, any sport, grades 7 through college.
Coach Greg Werner and his experienced staff run the academy, which has produced All-District, All-Region, All-State, All-American and Pro athletes.
The academy could prove to be the ticket to heightened athletic performance for your youngster. Check out their Web site.
Madison Experience an inspiration to serve
June 10, 2008Young alum Amanda Woodfield (‘05) says that her Madison Experience was the inspiration to embark on “a career defined by service.” She was involved in community service-learning, REACH, or Reality Educators Advocating Campus Health, Alternative Spring Break and the Student Government Association. Today Amanda is a Presidential Management Fellow and works at the National Cancer Institute. She’s a great “Be the Change” inspiration to others!

June 5, 2008Received word from Kai Degner that he’ll be officially introducing his campaign this afternoon at Harrisonburg’s Clementine Cafe. Kai says he’s looking to start a dialogue about what people want to see in Harrisonburg.
Madison community mourns loss of “Flip” DeLuca
June 4, 2008Professor emeritus Albert “Flip” DeLuca taught, coached and mentored scores of students in the SMAD program over the years. Many Madison alumni working in media today remember his insistence on excellence and his passion for student achievement.

Stanley Stewart ‘78 gives back to our youth
June 3, 2008Stanley Stewart (‘78), a new addition to JMU’s “Be the Change” Web site, has been working in the Loudoun County, Va., court system for almost 30 years in the juvenile justice arena. Stan was named the 2007 Administrator of the Year by the Virginia Juvenile Justice Association, and according to Stan helping young people make positive changes is a pleasure. He lives by the motto…”make a positive difference in the world, [even if it is] one person at a time.” Welcome, Stan.
JMU’s ROTC pioneer
June 2, 2008Our newest world changer, Maj. Gen. Raymond Mason (‘78), was instrumental in the creation of Madison’s first ROTC chapter back in 1976. You can read about his career in the fall 2006 “Madison” article “JMU ROTC pioneer serves the world’s freedom frontier” — the article is on Page 27.
