The April 2008 Virginia Living magazine has an article on small dairies in Virginia that still sell milk in bottles and deliver to customers’ doorsteps. The article “How Now?” by Lee Gimpel with photographs by JMU alum and Madison World Changer Casey Templeton offers a fascinating glimpse into this niche market. Take a look.

Clothesline Project worth attention
March 25, 2008The annual Clothesline Project display on JMU’s campus while sobering, is certainly worthwhile. The T-shirts decorated to represent individual experiences with domestic violence or sexual assault or victimization will be on display March 26 and 27 in Transitions. The kick-off “Take Back the Night” event is tonight on the Commons.
largest-ever gift from Forbes
March 24, 2008At the Centennial Luncheon on March 14, President Linwood H. Rose announced the largest-ever gift to JMU. The $5 million gift from Bruce and Lois Forbes will name the Performing Arts Center. And, just as important for Madison, the gift signals the birth of a “new culture of philanthropy” at JMU—a necessary component if JMU is to achieve its potential to develop the university’s private fundraising into a “world-class program,” according to Rose. The Forbes are responsible for changing the Madison campus in a number of ways. Thanks to the couple, our campus has statues of James Madison in two prominent spots. JMU students have developed the tradition of festooning the life-sized “Jemmy” with mementos of student life. The newest statue, heroic-sized and affectionately named “Big Jim,” will quickly be adopted into campus culture I’m sure.

rain didn’t dampen the Madison spirit!
March 17, 2008We enjoyed a glorious week of weather during JMU’s Centennial Celebration…but rain did arrive on the scene just in time for the fireworks Saturday night. The show did go on, and it was spectacular! And, true to form for the Madison campus, there was no shortage of spectators on hand (even in the rain) to enjoy the show. Our photography office has some great candid shots of the fireworks and other highlights of the week. In case you missed it, catch up on the fun online!

Volunteering, a different kind of Spring Break
March 7, 2008JMU students are known for taking Alternative Spring Breaks…using their time to give back to communities. One group was working this week in Charlotte, N.C. with Life Span, a non-profit organization that helps people with developmental disabilities. Read the News 14 Carolina article online.
