Skotchdopole, Chelsea

May 15, 2007

Catherine Hoffman in JMU’s College of Education sent us a note about the unique way Chelsea has brought change to the JMU campus:

“I had a training session today [January 17, 2007] in the Human Resources Building in Room 102. I have not been in that room for a while, and when I walked in, I immediately noticed the wonderful mural that has been painted on the back wall. A banner flows across the top of the mural with JMU’s mission statement, and various images of buildings on campus are painted in muted, but clear colors. I looked for the artist’s name at the bottom, and was surprised to see that the artist was one of our education students, Chelsea Skotchdopole. In fact, she was the recipient of the Dean’s Scholar award last year. After the training, I asked Diane Yerian, training coordinator, how they were able to get this mural painted. She advised me that they posted a student job ad, had three responses from interested students who were then asked to submit proposals. They selected Chelsea’s proposal. I thought a mural of some sort in the [CoE] cafeteria would be a wonderful addition to a student lounge, and if it could be done by a student, that creates a sense of ownership by the students for the space. I’m sure there are other students who have talents in this area as well.”

Way to go, Chelsea!
