A call for participation

April 24, 2007

Hey World Changers!
Some of you may be interested in participating in this upcoming event–a welcome to the class of 2011.

Steve Grande in JMU’s Orientation office is looking for volunteers to facilitate “Conversations with Professors” and/or “First Year Reading” discussions. Both will be held on Thursday, Aug. 23, a special day that the university has set aside to allow this interaction with our new students.

Of special note is that this year’s reading is “Federalist 10″ by James Madison, one of the great works of political philosophy.

Julia Campbell (‘89)

April 19, 2007

We’ve received sad news about one of our alumna, Julia Campbell (’89). Marcus Tonti, associate director of communications at Columbia University and a personal friend of Julia’s, informed us that the Peace Corps has confirmed her death in the Philippines. Julia was one of Madison’s 315 alumni who have joined the ranks of the Peace Corps. Her willingness to help others and devote herself to making a difference in the world was characteristic of Julia and exemplifies the spirit of JMU’s community. We mourn the loss of this special person.

Thanks to Madison World Changer Mike Hoss

April 17, 2007

Received this nice note of thanks from a colleague regarding Madison World Changer Mike Hoss (‘84) in New Orleans. Mike’s assisting some JMU students in their relief work in the city.

Jan and Be the Change members:

I have a really nice Be the Change “back story” to share!!

A few of my Centennial Duke students decided to get together with other students and take a trip to the Gulf during the second week of May. They will be helping with the continual Gulf area clean up and restoration.

A few of the Centennial Dukes noticed the Be the Change bio on Mike Hoss (‘84) of New Orleans. The students were very impressed with Mike and asked me if it would be possible for him to talk to their group.

I wrote to Mike and asked permission to give out his contact info, and he is SO EXCITED to share with current students and talk to this great group of volunteers.

THIS IS why I love JMU!!

Mike will be featured in the upcoming issue of the magazine, but his actions with this group of students just proves why our “Be the Changers” are SO VERY COOL!

I’m asking one of the students to write about this trip and Mike’s talk, so we can have a nice “follow-up” Be the Change story for a future magazine issue, MadisonOnline, MCN and possible newsletter(s).

Read Mike’s reply e-mail below.

Michelle,
I would be HONORED to speak to this group of students. We here in New Orleans are so thankful to the many volunteer groups who give of their free time to help us. I believe this is the fourth trip by JMU to our region to help and that is fantastic. I wanted to do something with the school on their last trip here but was unable to do so because of the Thanksgiving Holiday. Tell Lauren to contact me about the trip. I look forward to hearing from her and speaking to a special group of
students helping a region recover.

Sincerely
Mike Hoss (‘84)

Just heard from Casey Templeton (‘06). He is in Blacksburg working for AP, taking photographs documenting the tragedy that unfolded on the Virginia Tech campus yesterday. As Casey says, “Keep these victims and their families in your prayers.”
